Neo Muyanga and Sean Baumann
Neo Muyanga studied the Italian madrigal tradition with choral maestro Piero Poclen in Trieste, Italy. In the mid-90s, he co-founded the acoustic pop duo BLK Sonshine with Masauko Chipembere, garnering a following throughout Southern Africa and internationally. Neo also co-founded the Pan African Space Station (PASS) in 2008 with Ntone Edjabe - a continually evolving host of cutting-edge Pan-African music and sound art on the internet and across stages in Cape Town and other parts of the globe. He composes works for choir, chamber and large ensemble, and continues to tour widely as a solo performer and in various band guises.
Sean Baumann is a senior specialist psychiatrist with a special interest in schizophrenia. He obtained a basic medical degree from the University of Cape Town and post-graduate specialist qualifications in London and South Africa. Sean is the Senior Consultant for the Male Acute Services at Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. He is also the editor of the recently published Primary Care Psychiatry.
This project arises from a concern that the plight of the seriously mentally ill is either ignored or profoundly misunderstood, and that these responses significantly contribute to the suffering of those deemed ‘mad’.
