MOVEMENT SONGS

By: KAMVA Collective

KAMVA Cultural Production House during the lockdown of 2020 created two pieces of video work with musicians and dancers from Clermont, Durban`s Gqom scene and Khayelitsha, Cape Town`s Hip Hop movements. In this work, KAMVA merges a video production they did titled Mzansi Gqom Showcase, where Khayelitsha-based dancer Stoan “Move” Galela interprets the frustration of those trapped in the township during the level 5 lockdown in South Africa through interpretive dance, overlayed with a soundtrack by a local Gqom music producer. The video is interlaced with another work, that acts as an interlude between the longer looping segment of Stoan`s dance performance - where KAMVA shows the music video for Khayelitsha-based Hip Hop collective Soundz of the South (SOS) new song “For Power”. Inspired by neo-realist cinema, Stoan plays a down and out day-labourer looking for work, through dance and mime during the level 3 lockdown.
