Sibonelo Dance Project

Sibonelo Dance Project produces contemporary work that blends modern and traditional dance techniques. The company is based in Cape Town and trains young adults and youth from disadvantaged communities. The project started with a group of approximately 30 youth from previously disadvantaged areas who showed a particular passion for dance and performance. Operating largely without funding, the project grew to include performances by both youth and professional dancers (on a voluntary basis) on professional stages. Sibonelo presented Going Places and Ubunye at Infecting The City 2014, and Ababhidisi at Infecting The City 2015.

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Mzokuthula Gasa began his career in Durban with Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, under Jay Pather, after which he performed and choreographed for numerous international dance companies. On his return to South Africa from England, Mzokuthula founded Sibonelo Dance Project in Cape Town. Recently, he was a resident choreographer and company teacher for Jazzart Dance Theatre.
