Abangabonwa
By: Sibonelo Dance Project
Abangabonwa ('the unseen' in isiZulu) draws on the unheard and unseen stories of people living in the townships in poverty - mother-daughter love, struggles with substance abuse, and living in two ‘worlds’ of work and home. It was choreographed by Company members, drawing from the experiences of the dancers themselves.
The first movement of the piece represents the face or mask that people show to the outside world; the second movement the reality of the dancers' stories and situations they find themselves in; and the final movement healing and the reconciliation of these conflicting experiences. The final movement is a celebration of being both heard and seen.
Chorographed by: Mzokuthula Gasa and Sibonelo Dance Project company memebrs; performed by: Nkosinathi Mngomezulu, Thembekile Komani, Nkosentsa Tamana, Lwandiso Ntsume, Nkemiseng Khena, Nomfundo Hlongwa, Lusanda Dayimane, Amykay Klaasen, Yamkela Boya, Sive Gaika and Vuyokazi Vusani.
