Days Go By ... (Pulling You Endlessly Into The Future)
By: Michael Fitzmaurice
Days Go By... (Pulling You Endlessly Into The Future) is a digital/process work partly inspired by, and conceived as a response to, Laurie Anderson's White Lily, and in turn the words she quotes from RW Fassbinder's film Berlin Alexanderplatz, based on Alfred Döblin’s novel.
This piece aims to facilitate consideration of our sense of time within contemporary industrialised society, while suggesting another sense of time, offering refuge from a utilitarian sense of time: of days going by endlessly, inevitably… yet delivered with a sense of space, of un-rushed, un-hurried time... of meditative, contemplative time… as a meditation on our sense of time passing.
A process of time-lapse based scanning was used to capture the subject flower as it withered over the course of a month. The progressive states of decay were then reincorporated into composite images and video, suggesting the passage of time.
