Poetic License
By: Genna Gardini and CityVarsity Cape Town
In Poetic License, third year CityVarsity students perform poems inspired by their personal experiences of using public transport to move through and into Cape Town. Alternatively pragmatic, humorous, painful and questioning, these poems are a frank discussion about what public transport means to these young people.
The performances are part of the bustle of transit in the thoroughfare between the train station and the Golden Acre Shopping Centre, articulating stories without imposing them. As a memento, poets will give away lanyards, with their poems attached to them. The students will present these tokens to individuals who stops to listen to their poem. Here, the ephemeral presentation of poetry will come along with the tangible gift of something in some way useful to the commuter who hears it and acknowledging of their travels.
