Sitting
By: Tamryn Pelser and SOMA_Movement
How does a brief interaction with a stranger effect the course of an individual’s life?
Sitting is a response to Marina Abramović’s popular retrospective The Artist is Present. An exercise in human interaction and reaction within public space, the work aims to take this experience out of a gallery or theatre space, out of a therapeutic environment or religious domain, and to focus on a secular form of human connection within an urban environment.
Free human connection, in real time, is rare these days - a real time moment of being seen, heard, noticed and acknowledged by another person in this era of selfies, personal statuses and public online sharing of personal experience. Sitting considers how making therapy/counseling/listening accessible and public could impact people and highlight the necessity of guidance, human connection and individual process within the larger community.
