reach
By: Unusual Bones (Kanya Viljoen)
reach seeks to explore the contradictory nature of online communication platforms which have become essential during the global Covid-19 pandemic. During the past year these platforms have become moments of language and film in and of themselves, allowing us to reach towards one another. The piece will function as a video installation, projected against a wall in Cape Town for a week for an hour each evening. The video will exist of various groups of people trying to communicate with one another. People across the socio-political spectrum will have what seems to be mundane and fragmented conversations. Yet, when viewed together, they become poetic in nature, allowing for the notion of connection to stand central to the piece. Most of these conversations will be improvised by the performers and will then be edited together, allowing for a larger interwoven film to form. There will be no audio to the video footage and instead we will make use of visible subtitles.
