Surviving Solitude
By: Denise Onen
Could a story or book be adapted into a medium that isn't film or music, and could the placement of sounds manage not only to paint a picture in the mind's eye but create an immersive experience? Surviving Solitude is no ordinary sound piece; the work is an immersive poetic sound collage. As 3D immersive audio techniques are applied, the listener is not only told an original poetic story but immersed in a soundscape. During hard lockdown we were left in the dark, spending much time recalling the faces of our loved ones, missing shared spaces, grieving unexpected losses and trying to navigate what some call “the new normal.” Surviving Solitude will reflect on some of the experiences that tied us together, and through overlayed textures, explore the complexities of lived experiences that broke us apart.
