Velvet Spine

Velvet Spine

Newly formed theatre company Velvet Spine was co-founded by Koleka Putuma and Nicole Fortuin.

Performance poet and theatre practitioner in training, Koleka Putuma is completing a Degree in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town. Her work has travelled to Scotland, New York and around South Africa. Earlier this year she was crowned South Africa’s First National Slam Champion at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Koleka directed UHM (2014), which was awarded Best Student Writing at the NAF Student Festival in Grahamstown.

Currently in her final year of a Theatre and Performance Degree at the University of Cape Town, Nicole Fortuin has worked with prolific directors such as Christopher Weare in Curl Up and Dye, Lara Bye in Eurydice and Claire Stopford in The Crucible. In addition to her acting and singing talents, Nicole is also an award-winning dancer, having performed both locally and internationally.
